Brewing & Distilling

February, The Longest Month

I have always felt that February, despite only having at most 29 days, is the longest month of the year. Because of the short days and long, cold nights, time seems to take on a slow, tedious pace in February. As for sports, after the Super Bowl, football ends, and baseball does not start for another couple of months. Not being into basketball, hockey, and stock car racing makes for a long dry spell in terms of watching sports on television for me as well.

That is the bad news. Here is good news. February is a great month for brewing and drinking beer. When I started brewing beer at home in the late 1980’s, I found out during the 1990’s that brewing beer in February was great for a couple of reasons. 1, It gave me something to do to take the drudgery out of the month, and 2, It gave me even more reason to look forward to the spring because the beer brewed in February would be ready to drink in springtime. Speaking of drinking, dark beers like Stouts and Porters are perfect to drink in February as well. So, all things considered, February is not such a bad month after all!
