Birko’s Community Involvement

Birko is heavily involved in community service both locally and nationally. Members of Birko’s management team serve on several industry association boards.

Third-generation owner and chairman Kelly Green is a member of Vistage International, a global network for chief executives. She is a past board member of the North American Meat Association, the National Women’s Business Enterprise Council and Colorado Women’s Business Chamber of Commerce.

CEO Mark Swanson serves on the executive committee of the U.S. Meat Export Federation. He is a member of the CSU CIS Advisory Board and the immediate past president of the CSU Alumni Association Board of Directors, as well as a past member of the CSU Entrepreneurs Center Board of Directors. He is a member of the North American Meat Association, National Cattleman’s Beef Association, United Fresh Produce Association, American Meat Institute and Vistage International.

Mike Gangel, president of Chad Equipment, LLC, Birko’s equipment division, is a member of the North American Meat Association, the Southwest Meat Association and the American Meat Institute.

Birko’s Brewery Specialist Dana Johnson serves as District Membership Chair for the Rocky Mountain District of the Master Brewers Association. He is also responsible for the Western U.S. on the National Membership Subcommittee of the MBAA.

Fundraising Efforts

American Red Cross

Birko donates to the victims of the Colorado fires and floods through the American Red Cross.

Heifer International

Heifer International is a global non-profit that provides gifts of livestock to families who want to become self reliant. Birko sponsors a fundraising team through Heifer International, the Birko Greenjeans Team Heifer.

The Children’s Hospital of Denver

Birko is involved in the World Brewers Forum™ sponsored by KROC™, an educational forum and fundraiser benefitting The Children’s Hospital of Denver.

The Rise School of Denver

Birko employees support the Rise School of Denver, a school for toddlers and preschoolers with developmental disabilities.

Girls on the Run® of the Rockies

Girls on the Run® is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to 13 years old. The goal is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.

Birko also supports local entities such as Adams County Economic Development and the National Western Stock Show, and national associations such as the Rocky Mountain Microbrewing Symposium, The North American Meat Institute, Beef Industry Food Safety Council and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

Ward Harris Smith Scholarship Foundation

In honor of Birko’s founder, The Ward Harris Smith Scholarship Foundation was established at Texas A&M in 1980.


Florence Smith-Powers Scholarship Fund

In February 2012, Birko established the Florence Smith-Powers scholarship fund through The North American Meat Institute for deserving undergraduates in food science.

Birko supports Colorado State University, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Cal Poly and Fresno State by volunteering and collaborating on research for the betterment of food safety.
